Next month, fans will watch Doctor Strange pull off his biggest magic trick of all when he appears in theaters on November 4. The much-anticipated film will follow the cult character as he trains in the mystic arts and clashes with a mind-bending enemy. Reviews for the film continue to sing the film’s praises, prompting fans to wonder whether Doctor Strange might spin out a sequel.

And, if Scott Derrickson has anything to say, then the answer to that question is yes.

Den Of Geek is reporting that the director has conceptualized plans for a sequel. Derrickson said, “I love the character, I love the visual possibilities, and I know the comics so well – [the first movie is] the tip of an iceberg. There’s so much progress that can be made.”

Of course, this news isn’t too surprising. Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe know how interconnected the franchise is, so it would be very unlikely for Doctor Strange to appear as a one-off. We already know the character will appear in Avengers: Infinity War, so now it’s just a matter of when the hero will return for a solo sequel.

When the director was asked what direction the sequel might go in, Derrickson said his team was particularly interested in villains. He even went so far as to reference baddies from Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy.

“What made The Dark Knight so great was that the origin story of Batman had been well-told, and then it was time to bring in a villain where you really got to go deep,” he said. “And not just the Joker, also Two-Face. It was a more visceral experience, I’d love to be able to do that for Doctor Strange.”

However, there is one person attached to the film who refuses to comment on the possibility of a sequel. Benedict Cumberbatch was coy when he was asked about a second Doctor Strange film by simply saying, “There’s more than one [Doctor Strange solo movie]” on his contract. So, at the very least, fans know the actor is contractually obligated to pull another film out of his top hat – or Cloak of Levitation.

However, Cumberbatch has said his character will play a key role in the future of the MCU. The actor told ComicBook.com during a recent interview that. “There’s a lot going on this story [Doctor Strange] that will lead you to understand why he’ll play a key role in the next phase.”

Marvel’s Doctor Strange follows the story of the talented neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a tragic car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Based in New York City’s Greenwich Village, Doctor Strange must act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond, utilizing a vast array of metaphysical abilities and artifacts to protect the Marvel cinematic universe.

Doctor Strange will hit theaters on November 4 2016.
