Yesterday, Young Justice fans heard news they had been longing to hear for years. Young justice is finally returning for its third season. While that news alone is enough to make fans celebrate, there’s still plenty of questions left unanswered. One involves which television network or streaming service Young Justice Season 3 will land at. Another concerns the threat that the Young Justice team will face.

The Team battled The Light’s puppets in Season 1. Five years later, in Young Justice: Invasion, they battled the Kroloteans, the Reach, and the Light more directly, as well as the threat Mongul and the Warworld. So who is next on Young Justice‘s villain card?
Most likely, Young Justice Season 3 will feature the same threat being seeded in the background of the DC Extended Universe movies: Darkseid and the armies of Apokolips.
Fans who finished Young Justice: Invasion will remember seeing Darkseid in the season’s final episode. Vandal Savage escaped Earth by commandeering the Warworld. Traveling past Rimbor, Warworld arrives at Apokolips. Savage then uses a boom tube to travel to the surface of Apokolips, where he is greeted by an intimidating figure who steps out of the shadows of Apokolips. Though he is never named, DC Comics fans know that this figure can only be Darkseid.
While this was the first on-screen appearance of Darkseid in Young Justice, it is hardly the first time his presence has been felt. In the first season of Young Justice, Darkseid was a partner of the Light and provided them with advanced technology from Apokolips, included the Father Box and the ability to travel using boom tubes. Darkseid’s minion, Desaad, had a similar arrangement with the Earth-based crime organization called Intergang.
While the Light took on new partners in both the Reach and their rivals, the Kroloteans, by the time Young Justice: Invasion took place, Darkseid was still working his machinations on Earth. G. Gordon Godfrey played the role of news pundit on Earth, but fans of Jack Kirby’s original New Gods and Fourth World stories, the stories that introduced Darkseid and Apokolips, will have known that Godfrey was an agent of Darkseid sent to spread propaganda and mistrust on Earth.
Godfrey was active during the time between Young Justice Season 1 and Young Justice: Invasion, seeding doubt and resentment toward the Justice League among Earth’s populace. He continued in this role through Young Justice: Invasion, and was among the first to extend a hand towards the Reach as Earth’s true protectors.
However, it seems even that may have been a larger ploy on behalf of Darkseid and the Light. After the Reach turned against Earth, the United Nations Secretary-General resigned his position, and Godfrey was quick to volunteer Lex Luthor, a member of the Light, to take over the position.
