Doctor Strange has made himself a permanent spot in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Not only was Benedict Cumberbatch fantastic in the role of Sourcerer Supreme, but the film just crosssed the $500 million dollar line at the international box office, meaning the fans fell hard the mystical side of Marvel.

Doctor Strange is already confirmed to have a significant role in the upcoming Russo brother’s film Avengers: Inifinity War, considering he wears the green stone around his neck.

Now that Marvel has broken the barrier and took a plunge into previously uncharted territory with a purely trippy and otherworldly story, they opened up the rest of the MCU to the mystic arts.

Scott Derrickson, director, already expressed that he would like the sequel to be a bit villain-centric, in hopes of introducing Nightmare:

“We decided not to do that because that’s a bit of a complex idea to try to introduce everything we do introduce and introduce the idea of nightmares themselves as being a dimension. I hope somewhere down the line we do get to explore that because I think that’s super cool concept.”

And explained how it worked well for Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy:

“What made The Dark Knight so great was that the origin story of Batman had been well-told, and then it was time to bring in a villain where you really got to go deep,” he said. “And not just the Joker, also Two-Face. It was a more visceral experience, I’d love to be able to do that for Doctor Strange.”

Let’s get into 5 Mystical Marvel Characters We Want To See In The Doctor Strange Sequel

Clea

Even though fans were rather upset that Doctor Strange’s love interested and long-time partner Clea wasn’t included in the first movie, that doesn’t mean we won’t see her in a sequel.

Clea has such a huge impact in almost all of the Sourcerer Supreme’s storylines, as she helps him protect Earth from the Dark Dimension.

Clea is the Princess of The Dark Dimension, the infamous home of all things dark and magical. Even though she rules the magical underworld, she is far from a villain – Her rule over The Dark Dimension means keeping that darkness from spilling over into our world.

When Doctor Strange was engaged in a battle in The Dark Dimension, Clea came to his aid, and the two fell in love. They worked together, using their powers to keep their worlds separate.

Doctor Strange has only just discovered the Dark Dimension in the first film, he still has plenty of time to meet Clea!

Nightmare

Derrickson has already teased a certain storyline and villain for the Doctor Strange sequel, and we’re down with it.

Mainly because Nightmare is one of the first villains that Doctor Strange ever had to face and considering we are only at the very beginning of his very long story, it would make perfect sense.

In the film, Doctor Strange hasn’t even become the next Sourcerer Surpreme yet, proving there is much left to come.

In an interview with IGN, Derrickson told the site he, “really like[s] the character of Nightmare and the concept that the Nightmare Realm is a dimension.”

“That’s early โ€“ that’s like the first Strange tale. I think that’s in the introductory episode of Doctor Strange, and I always loved that,” he continued.

Nightmare was first introduced in Strange Tales 1963 as the ruler of the Dream Dimension, which isn’t a very happy place to visit while you’re sleeping.

Althought Nightmare wasn’t the big bad in the first film, Derrickson would like to explore the dream dimension in more detail, “somewhere down the line.”

The Living Tribunal

Well, as far as we’re concerned The Living Tribunal appearing in the Doctor Strange sequel is a given, because it was already hinted at with Mordo’s chosen “weapon.”

In the movie, Karl Mordo teaches Stephen Strange about many magical artifacts, including his own weapon, “The Staff of the Living Tribunal.”ย

ComicBook.com’s Kofi Outlaw explains more:

“The Living Tribunal is an entity that looks like an Oscar statue with a floating head and three faces. Its purpose is to oversea all the alternate realities of the Marvel Universe, and judge them as needed.”

“He first appeared (appropriately enough) in a Doctor Strange story, where the Sorcerer Supreme had to convince the cosmic judge that Earth’s potential for great evil shouldn’t be cause for its destruction.”

Consindering how closely The Living Tribunal connects to The Infinity Gauntlet and Thanos, we might even see the judge appear in Avengers: Infinity War first.

Shuma-Gorath

Although he looks like a goofy green octopus, Shuma-Gorath is a powerful extra-dimensional demon who ruled ancient Earth and fed on its souls.

The demon is an ancient force of chaos, the immortal, nigh-invincible, and godlike ruler of nearly a hundred alternate universes.

Banished to another dimension, Shuma-Gorath is a demon often summoned by Doctor Strange’s foes and sent into battle.

Shuma-Gorath once tried to enter the Earth Dimension through the mind of The Ancient One. To stop this from happening, Doctor Strange had to shut down the brain of The Ancient One never allowing him to return to his human form again.

In other words, Shuma-Gorath caused the death of The Ancient One’s physical form.

The Ancient One died as a mortal, but became one with the universe, appearing as an astral projection. While this did not happen in the movie, it proves just how big of a threat Shuma-Gorath is to Earth…Doctor Strange had to kill his on mentor.

Shuma-Gorath is more powerful than other interdimensional demons like Mephisto and Saatanist.

During the 2013 “Infinity” storyline, Thanos’ servant Ebony Mawย tricks Doctor Strange into summoning Shuma-Gorath to the streets of New York. Ahem..Infinty War

Brother Voodoo

ย

Before Doctor Strange was released, many speculated that Brother Voodoo could be in the movie, depending on when the MCU decided to start the Sourcerer Supreme’s story on the big screen.

Brother Voodoo is a long-standing Marvel character who uses Haitian voodoo magic and adopted his superhero alter-ego once his brother Daniel dies.

In the comics, Voodoo has even taken up the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme whenย Stephen Strange wasn’t fit for duty during the Dark Reign storyline.

At this point Brother Voodoo became Doctor Voodoo, since he has donned the mystical mantle. He even gets to wear the fancy red cape…
