Since Suicide Squad Extended Cut was released on Digital HD, fans have had a lot of time to study the finer details of this past summer’s supehero smash hit.
Speaking of smashing, the backstory behind Jared Leto’s Joker’s teeth wasn’t mentioned in the film, but it’s said that the reason he wears that super-shiny grill is because Batman punched him so hard that he smashed his teeth in right before he tossed him in jail.

Director David Ayer said, “This is sort of my personal thing and maybe less about a larger connection. But Joker killed Robin and Batman basically smashes his teeth out and locks him up in Arkham Asylum.
It’s in the asylum where Joker would have done the ‘damaged’ tattoo as a message to Batman saying, ‘You’ve damaged me. I was so beautiful before and now you’ve destroyed my face.’ That’s where the grill comes from.“
However, a fan noticed that through out Suicide Squad Extended Cut, the Joker’s teeth changed quite a few times from simple dental caps that didn’t cover the entire tooth to a mouth full of metallic money.
We didn’t get to see the punch, but we did see the destruction it caused. This specific incarnation of the Joker seems to be very concerned with his syle, appearence, and what others think of his hip new look.
He’s covered in tattoos, is always fixing his hair, wears a bright purple crocodile leather trench coat, drives a pink Lambo, and is a fan of fine jewels.
Imagine how upset he was when his teeth were smashed out of his mouth? How was he going to perform his signature cackle or that creepy smile?
During his sessions with Dr. Harleen Quinzel he had plain silver caps on his front teeth, but later in the film his mouth was all decked out in pure chrome – straight up gangster style.
He really wanted people to notice him…
Our best guess is that after Batman punched in his pretty little mouth and tossed him in jail, someone (like a doctor) simply capped his teeth with whatever material was lying around.
But once he tricked Harleen into helping him escape and was back on the streets, he upped his cred with a brand new grille.
Since Suicide Squad Extended Cut is full of flashbacks with each of the characters, we see Joker in the past, the present, and even the future in Harley Quinn’s dreams.
Yes, he does have different teeth through out the movie, but only because the audience is seeing him during different periods of time. At the end of the movie, his teeth are all metal with no actual enamel showing.
We’re pretty sure that when Batman catches him again, he’ll knock that flashy grille right out of his mouth for the second time.
