When Deadpool burst into theaters earlier this year, the NSFW romp thrilled fans with its quips and raunchy sense of humor. The film, who starred Ryan Reynolds as the mouthy mercenary, reimagined how a superhero flick would work with audiences. So, it is not too surprising to hear the creative team behind Deadpool 2 isn’t planning to mess with perfection. In a recent interview, the sequel’s producer said the movie will be as “provocative and startling” as the original.

“The goal for us when we sat down and started talking about it was it needs to be as provocative and startling as the first film which means it can’t just be a continuation of the first film,” Kinberg explained.
“It has tonally and stylistically be as fresh and original. That’s a big challenge especially because they had 10 years to gestate on the first movie and we don’t have that kind of time on the second movie. That’s the biggest mandate going into on the second film: to not make it bigger. We have to resist the temptation to make it bigger in scale and scope, which is normally what you do when you have a surprise hit movie. But actually stay true to the tenets of it’s the tone and the style and the humor that make it so special โ it’s not the explosions and the special effects.”
Judging by Kinberg’s words, it looks like the folks behind Deadpool 2 don’t want to reinvent the wheel when it comes to the sequel. The creative team is not interested in trading in quality humor and abrupt action for blockbusting action sequences that overshadow Deadpool’s manic personality.
When Deadpool 2 hits theaters, the movie will do so with a slightly altered crew behind it. Tim Miller exited the project earlier this year, and director David Leitch was announced to have filled in the role not long ago. Leitch, who co-directed John Wick, has been a welcomed addition to the crew and is allegedly on-board with the sequel’s small scale.
From the looks of it, Leitch and Kinberg are not the only ones excited about the project. Reynolds has been vocal about his passion for the project, and co-star TJ Miller has also gushed about the upcoming film.
