Unreleased Studio Ghibli Film Coming To U.S. Theaters

In May 1993, Studio Ghibli debuted a film called Ocean Waves which was based on a titular novel by Saeko Himuro. However, the film has stubbornly stayed away from U.S. audiences due to licensing reasons. Ocean Waves and Grave of the Fireflies were missing from Walt Disney Company’s distribution deal back in 1996. Grave of the Fireflies has since been released abroad, and now GKIDS is bringing Ocean Waves over too.

The New York-based distributors is bringing the lost anime">anime feature to U.S. theaters. The studio will restore the Studio Ghibli TV movie that was directed by Tomomi Mochizuki. The movie will be coming to select theaters across the country between December 2016 and March 2017.

If you have not heard about Ocean Waves, then you should know the feature was the first at Studio Ghibli to not be helmed by Hayao Miyazaki. The movie is a slice-of-life soap set in the city of Kōchi and follows a high school love triangle concerning two friends and a new girl from Tokyo. The film lacks the usual magical realism threaded throughout other Studio Ghibli creations.

Right now, fans have GKIDS to thank for the international distribution of most Studio Ghibli titles. The company oversees all films except for Tales from Earthsea. They recently brought over Only Yesterday to the U.S. as well.
