After having stirred up controversy by linking Steve Rogers to the Nazi-affiilated supervillain group HYDRA earlier this year, Marvel is ready to have another go at the third rail with next week’s Captain America: Sam Wilson #17.

In a preview released by the publisher, Wilson’s successor as The Falcon, Joaquin Torres, faces some problems that are likely to make some headlines in the real world.

In the preview pages (seen in the attached image gallery), Torres is the subject of a conversation on a right-wing news magazine program, wherein a guest who writes about immigration issues accuses him of being an illegal immigrant, and speculate as to when he will be deported.

A silhouetted figure that appears to be Joaquin responds to the accusation with a shouted curse word, which we assume means it’s accurate.

The solicitation text for the issue simply teased a team-up with Rage, so it’s not clear how much of the issue will center on the issue of Torres’ citizenship or whether it will be a slow-burn story. That said, it’s obviously topical coming on the heels of Donald Trump’s election as President of the United States. Trump railed against illegal immigration during the Presidential campaign, bringing the issue back to the political foreground.

The Captain America titles don’t shy away from controversy and contemporary issues: for a while there, sitting President Richard Nixon was actually a villain in the book. It’s also frequently taken on issues like racism and domestic surveillance, either overtly or in parable.

Captain America: Sam Wilson #17 will be in stores January 4. You can contact your local retailer to get a copy or buy a digital copy on ComiXology now.
