LEGO Batman Reigns Supreme In Friday Box Office

You’ll need more than an army of warriors and Ice Cube to take down LEGO Batman, as the film handily takes the top spot in this Friday’s box office.

The film is being rated quite well amongst critics and audiences alike, with an 80.43 on ComicBook.com’s composite ranking. That goodwill has resulted in The LEGO Batman Movie fending off every newcomer to theaters this week, with the only competition coming from a holdover from last week, Fifty Shades Darker (via Variety).

LEGO Batman cleared $7.5 million on Friday from 4,088 theaters and is on track for a second weekend in the $38 million range. The film has already brought in over $64 million domestically and has topped the $100 million mark worldwide. Fifty Shades Darker added another 6.8 million from 3,714 theaters, which will add to it’s over $68 million domestic total. The film has already grossed over $166 million worldwide.

As for the new films, Mat Damon’s Great Wall picked up $5.9 million from 3,325 theaters and is on track for around $19 to $20 million for the weekend. While that’s not what the studio hoped for, the film has already done massively well overseas, so the film will likely still be qualified as a success when is all is said and done.

The comedy Fist Fight brought in $3.8 million from 3,185 theaters and should settle in at a $12 to $13 million for the weekend. The other debut, A Cure For Wellness, had trouble finding an audience and only brought in $1.5 million from 2,704 theaters. If this keeps up, it will bring in from $4 to $5 million by weekend’s end.

In the irreverent spirit of fun that made The LEGO Movie a worldwide phenomenon, the self-described leading man of that ensemble – LEGO Batman – stars in his own big-screen adventure. But there are big changes brewing in Gotham, and if he wants to save the city from The Joker’s hostile takeover, Batman may have to drop the lone vigilante thing, try to work with others and maybe, just maybe, learn to lighten up.

Will Arnett reprises his starring role from The LEGO Movie as the voice of LEGO Batman, aka Bruce Wayne. Zach Galifianakis (Hangover films) stars as The Joker; Michael Cera (TV’s Arrested Development) as the orphan Dick Grayson; Rosario Dawson (TV’s Daredevil) as Barbara Gordon; and Ralph Fiennes (Harry Potter films) as Alfred.
