Chi-Chi, you better keep an eye on your man. In the world of Dragon Ball, there are few couples as popular as Goku and Chi-Chi. While fans may side-eye the latter's supreme nagging skills, the feisty heroine is a staple in the fandom. As the Ox-King's daughter, Chi-Chi was introduced back in Dragon Ball as a timid girl who develops into a forward tomboy. Fans were not surprised to hear Goku wound up marrying the Fire Mountain princess, but it seems like another character may have suited the Dragon Ball hero more so.
That's right. If you ever shipped Goku with Kuririn, then one of the stars of Dragon Ball is right there with you.
Back when Dragon Ball Z Kai was given its second Blu-ray volume, the release was paired with a booklet featuring a cast interview with Mayumi Tanaka. The actress, who has voiced Kuririn for years now, talked in-depth about her fighter. So, when it came to Goku, Tanaka said Kuririn's love for the Saiyan was one Chi-Chi may not be able to match.
"At any rate, Kuririn really loves Goku," Tanaka explained. "That's why he waited for Goku during the battle with Vegeta, and on Planet Namek. He's really in the position of a wife, going 'I'm no match for these guys, so get here quick, Goku~!' He just might make a better wife for Goku than Chi-Chi."
Of course, the comment was said in jest. Kuririn and Goku have one of the most celebrated bromances in all of anime, after all. The pair are childhood friends who trained together are on-and-off rivals under Master Roshi. As they grew older, Goku viewed Kuririn as a true brother and even managed to go Super Saiyan for the first time after his friend was killed by Freeza. They are the definition of friend goals for most, so it's no surprise Kuririn loves Goku as much as Chi-Chi. Whether it's the same kind of love, that is for you to decide.
The celebrated voice actress also talked about why Kuririn was a fan-favorite hero. For her, the character's charm all came down to his relatable nature. "I think there are a lot of people who empathize with Kuririn! Of course, boys admire strong people like Goku or Vegeta, but I think that they're too strong, which can make it hard to empathize with them. But Kuririn gets frightened, and people appreciate that."
"He has very human aspects, such as when it seems like he's going to die, he'll go, "I wanted to get married~!" Even on Planet Namek, when he was surrounded on all sides by formidable enemies, he put all his might into doing what he could, and did his best to desperately gather the Dragon Balls with Gohan… Precisely because of parts like that, I think that it's easy for people watching the anime to see themselves in his position!"
This month, Dragon Ball Super's story arc kicked off the 'Universal Survival' saga. You can check out the brief synopsis for it below:
