There are those who feel Disney is overstepping their family driven lane by including a gay character in their upcoming live-action retelling of Beauty and the Beast. Those voices include an Alabama theater canceling their showings of the film, but LeFou actor Josh Gad wants to put a bow on the matter for good.

In an interview with People (via Variety), Gad talks of the moment in question, saying the “gay moment” is “subtle but incredibly effective” and “everything that needed to be said on this issue has definitely been said”. He added “There is so much fear out there of that which we don’t understand, that which we don’t know. The “film is one of inclusiveness” and noted that the core theme is “never to judge a book by its cover.”
In fact, that type of rush to judgment is evident in the film’s villain, Gaston, who makes a assumption about The Beast and runs with it, inciting a riot. “You have a character in Gaston who uses his charm offensive to whip other people into a frenzy to go and attack somebody they’ve never met. Somebody that’s different,” said Gad. “Somebody that only represents a danger because [Gaston] says that he represents a danger.”
He added that the story is “more resonant than it’s ever been.” “I do think [the moment] is going to be effective and I do think it’s important.”
