It turns out not even the Smurfs, Power Rangers, or the Major could take out Alec Baldwin's snarky Boss Baby at the box office in its second week. The only competition for the film came in the form of Disney's still rolling Beauty and the Beast, and it is going to be a fight to the finish line.
At this point though, it seems Boss Baby has the slight edge, pulling in $6.88 million on Friday from 3,829 locations (via Deadline). It's estimated to hit around 26.3 million for the weekend, ending up in domestic haul so far of $89.3 million domestically. That's especially impressive given that Sony released what many assumed to be the prevailing kid's film in Smurfs: Lost Village, but the picture has underwhelmed so far, bringing in around $4.1 million for an estimated weekend total of $14 million. For a film with a budget of around $100 million and some A+ talent attached, that has to sting a bit for the studio. The film is getting good reviews though, so maybe it can hold on in future weeks to add to that total.
Boss Baby's main competition came in the form of Disney's Beauty and the Beast, which is in its fourth week. The film brought in another $6.8 million on Friday to bring its weekend prediction around $25.1 million. If those estimates hold the film will have a domestic total of $432.7 million, and currently has a worldwide total of over $926 million. The film has a great chance of crossing the $1 billion mark before its theatrical run is done.
Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow's Going in Style brought in $4.2 million on Friday, with Ghost in the Shell earning $2.1 million, with an estimate of $7.2 million for the weekend. That would bring it around the $31 million total in domestic if that holds. Power Rangers lands outside the top 5 with another $1.7 million on Friday, and estimates say it will total $6.3 million over the weekend. That would land its domestic total at around $75.2 million.
Beauty and the Beast is the fantastic journey of Belle, a bright, beautiful and independent young woman who is taken prisoner by a beast in his castle. Despite her fears, she befriends the castle's enchanted staff and learns to look beyond the Beast's hideous exterior and realize the kind heart and soul of the true Prince within.
Beauty and the Beast stars Emma Watson as Belle; Dan Stevens as the Beast; Luke Evans as Gaston, the handsome, but shallow villager who woos Belle; Oscar winner Kevin Kline as Maurice, Belles eccentric, but lovable father; Josh Gad as Lefou, Gaston's long-suffering aide-de-camp; Golden Globe nominee Ewan McGregor as Lumiere, the candelabra; Oscar nominee Stanley Tucci as Maestro Cadenza, the harpsichord; Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Plumette, the feather duster; six-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald as Madame Garderobe, the wardrobe; Oscar nominee Ian McKellen as Cogsworth, the mantel clock; and two-time Academy Award winner Emma Thompson as the teapot, Mrs. Potts.
Beauty and the Beast is in theaters now, while Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge lands on May 26, 2017. Cars 3 is next up, racing into theaters on July 14, 2017, with Pixar's Coco hitting on November 22nd, 2017. Disney's live action Cruella currently has no release date, and neither does Maleficent 2, The Jungle Book sequel, or the live-action Aladdin. Toy Story 4 hits on July 13, 2018, and the live-action Mulan is scheduled for November 2nd, 2018. Mary Poppins Returns lands shortly thereafter on December 25, 2018.
