Watch Rogue One’s Epic Space Battle Edited With John Williams Iconic Score

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story blew fan expectations out of the water with a unique take on Lucasfilm’s Force-driven franchise, but it did a lot of things different from the other Saga of movies.

The gritty, war-focused film didn’t have any Jedi. It didn’t open with an famous crawl of text. And the film forewent the classic John Williams score, opting to employ Michael Giacchino as composer instead.

But now a fan edit of the first Star Wars film replaces the backing music with Williams’ well-known notes, adding to the epic dog fights in space a whole new layer of nostalgia that fits really well.

Maple Films released an excerpt of what will be a longer edit they’re calling Rogue One: The Battle Of Scarif.

The clip shows the original clip with Giacchno’s score intact, then a stripped down version where they have to recreate the sound effects. Maple Films explains that the home video release only contains the one track, so they recreated a lot of the sound effects by pulling from previous films.

Then they add in Williams iconic score, adding a whole new layer to the climactic battle between the Rebel forces and the Imperial fleet.

It adds a bit of levity to the scene overall, going to show just how much fun can be injected into big space battles when a Williams-led orchestra is providing the tunes. Giacchino’s score is obviously much more tense with some quieter moments unique to the film’s overall tone, truly enhancing director Gareth Edwards’ vision.

But this version is still highly entertaining, bringing the scene one step closer to feeling like it was in one of the main Star Wars movies.

Both versions are great, and the Giacchino score serves the film better due to how it fits in with the completed picture, but this fan edit goes to show just how much Williams’ music contributes to making a Star Wars Saga movie feel like it belongs in the franchise.

A band of resistance fighters unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans in ‘Star Wars’ anthology film, Rogue One

Directed by Gareth Edwards, it’s the first of the new standalone features from Lucasfilm and Disney, which take place outside the core “Skywalker Saga” of films noted by an Episode number. Rogue One tells the story of the small band of rebels that were tasked with stealing the plans to the first Death Star.
