With the DC Extended Universe beginning to fully take shape, a myriad of popular characters from the pages of DC Comics are waiting to be cast. And there’s a chance that one fan-favorite actress could step into an iconic DC Comics role… if she has anything to say about it.

Katheryn Winnick, best known for appearing as Lagertha in History Channel’s Vikings, has been entertaining the possibility of playing Dinah Lance, A.K.A. the Black Canary, within the DCEU for quite some time.

The Black Canary has a storied history within the DC universe, and has gained a strong fanbase in recent years thanks to Katie Cassidy’s portrayal of the character on The CW’s Arrow. But thanks to Winnick’s hints online, many have embraced the possibility of her taking on the role on the big screen. This was initially sparked by a tweet from the actress in March of last year, in which she said she is “itching to try the Canary Cry,” the character’s sonic scream.

This sparked a lot of excitement amongst the DC fandom, with many set on Winnick playing the Justice League and Birds of Prey member. In the months since, Winnick has continued to fuel the fire of speculation, responding with a “hell yea” when asked if she would take on the role.

And today, Winnick sparked even more speculation when she shared a very familiar piece of fanart on Twitter. The piece, courtesy of BossLogic, was created back in December, when the possibility of Winnick playing Black Canary hit the mainstream.

This isn’t the first time that an actor’s online activity has caught on to DCEU fans. Armie Hammer famously trolled fans last year about the possibility of him playing Hal Jordan/Green Lantern, and Beauty and the Beast and Frozen star Josh Gad has recently raised some eyebrows as to whether or not he will be playing the DCEU’s version of The Penguin.

And at the root of it, Winnick is a fantastic candidate to play the character. Aside from the physical similarities between her and comic book Black Canary, Winnick also has a strong background in martial arts, and an established fanbase.

This follows recent news about who could potentially play Black Canary’s love interest, Oliver Queen/Green Arrow. Many fancasts have paired Winnick alongside Charlie Hunnam, best known for his appearances in Pacific Rim and Sons of Anarchy. While Hunnam previously denied any possibility of him taking the role, he appeared to have changed his tune during the King Arthur: The Legend of the Sword press tour. In a recent interview with Omeleteve, the actor seemed very open about the role, literally asking DC to give him a call.

As of right now, its unclear if Winnick will in fact win the role of DCEU Black Canary, the frequent fan support behind the possibility should certainly help her cause. With several DCEU films concerning characters in Black Canary’s orbit – such as Gotham City Sirens and Batgirl – on the horizon, here’s hoping that Winnick will get to show off her Canary Cry sooner than later.
