Wonder Woman Director Set To Break Another Box Office Record

Wonder Woman is only in its first week at the box office, and the DC Comics superhero movie is already set to break multiple box-office records.

Director Patty Jenkins already set a new high for Thursday night box office returns by a film with a female director. Now she’s set to break the record for opening weekend box office by a film with a female director.

The record is currently held by Fifty Shades of Grey, which was directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson. The film opened to $85 million over three days and $93 million if the Valentine’s Day holiday is included in the total.

Even giving Fifty Shades of Grey the four-day advantage, the most conservative projections for Wonder Woman still have the film breaking the record with $96 million over the weekend, and the film’s opening weekend box office could reach as high as $103 million.

The strong opening instantly puts Jenkins’ Wonder Woman in the running to become one of the highest-grossing films directed by a woman of all time. The top three spots in that category currently belong to Kung Fu Panda 2, Mamma Mia!, and Fifty Shades of Grey.

Wonder Woman was created by William Moulton Marston for DC Comics. She made her first appearance in All Star Comics #8 in 1941 and has gone on to become a feminist icon and one of DC Comics’ most beloved and recognizable characters. Though she had a popular television series in the 1970s starring Lynda Carter, the Wonder Woman movie will be the character’s first time headlining a film.
