It has nearly been a month since Wonder Woman entered theaters, but fervor over the film has yet to die down. The film recently hit the $300 million benchmark at the domestic box office to signal its unstoppable reach. And, now, one of the film’s star has ignited more buzz over Wonder Woman by confirming a popular fan theory.

Taking to Twitter, Eugene Brave Rock seemingly verified an increasingly popular fan theory about his role as Chief. The character didn’t get much of his history explored, but Wonder Woman did see Chief make up part of her steadfast entourage as Steve Trevor took her to the frontlines of World War I. When Diana first meets Chief, she has a short conversation with him in Blackfoot, and its translation has since inspired a (now) vetted theory about the smuggler.

When Diana and Chief talk, the rest of their team and even moviegoers were left out of part of their conversation. The pair spoke in a language used by a certain Native American group, and Chief introduced himself as Napi during the exchange. The introduction was the only part of the conversation which didn’t get English subtitles, and it made fans wonder whether Chief could be a demigod. According to Native American lore, Napi is said to be a god of creation, and Brave Rock is not turning fans from the theory.
On social media, Brave Rock answered a message from io9’s Beth Elderkin about the theory. The reporter asked if “the character of the Chief is a demi-god as well” or just a simple joke between him and Diana. Brave Rock responded, writing, “Blackfoot culture hero and Demi-god.”

Brave Rock may be implying there is more to Chief than what meets the eye, but Warner Bros. has yet to say anything about the reveal. Of course, the idea is one that has intrigued fans. Diana is a demigod with Greek origins, but Napi is sourced directly from Native American roots. The deity comes from the Blackfoot tribe and is described as a sagely trickster who teaches humanity about knowledge. If Chief is actually a demigod, Warner Bros. may make room for the wise smuggler in Wonder Woman‘s sequel, so fans may get to see another familiar face when that feature drops.
