The next major movie from Marvel Studios will build upon one of the world’s most popular superheroes debuts from last year’s Captain America: Civil War. Though Spider-Man made a major impact in a short time during that film’s climactic airport battle, we’ve yet to see the character get the spotlight he deserves in the MCU.

That all changes when Spider-Man: Homecoming debuts in theaters next week, joined by one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s heaviest hitters in Robert Downey Jr.‘s Iron Man.

As established in Civil War, Tony Stark will be featured as Peter Parker’s mentor in the new movie. Downey Jr. and new Spidey actor Tom Holland have a great chemistry that really shines in the trailers, and we can’t wait to see how it all plays out in the new film.

โ€จAnd given that Marvel Studios and Sony are planning to make two more Spider-Man movies after Homecoming, we’re also wondering how this relationship will develop in future films.

Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts recently spoke with ScreenRant ahead of his movie’s premiere when he was asked if he’d like to build on the interactions between Stark and Parker in the sequel.

“Yeah, I think that’s inevitably going to be such a big part of Peter’s life, but I also do think it’s sort of the starting point,” Watts said. “Like you were saying, there are so many other elements and characters in this universe for Peter to interact with, I can’t wait to see what else we can do.”

Watts is alluding to the news that broke regarding the Spider-Man sequel featuring a different MCU character in a prominent role, and it likely won’t be RDJ’s Iron Man. Fans have been wondering what that means for the character, especially after Kevin Feige intimated that Avengers: Infinity War and its untitled sequel will be the end of the road for some Marvel heroes.

Hopefully this doesn’t mean Iron Man’s days in the MCU are numbered โ€” as the superhero who paved the way for an entire franchise, this era’s end would be more bitter than sweet for most fans.

Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters July 7.
