The violence and hatred displayed in Charlottesville, Virginia, this past weekend affected all of America – including Marvel Comics creator Stan Lee, who has since issued a profound statement on racism and intolerance.

To be more accurate, Lee re-issued a statement on racism and intolerance in the wake of Charlottesville – a statement he originally put out way back in 1968, in the “Stan’s Soapbox” section of Marvel Comics.

Check out what Lee had to say about bigotry then – and now – in the statement, below:

Some cynical readers may point to the history of Lee’s comic book creations as basis for hypocrisy on the part of the Marvel Comics icon. However, as we’re hearing in the national debate around Charlottesville, petty derision of our individual shortcomings on tolerance should not (nay, cannot) divide us – especially when real life begins to look like a scene from a HYDRA recruitment video.

Marvel Comics continues to entertain readers and fans all over the world – with ever-increasing diversity in its lineup of superheroes.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe continues with Thor: Ragnarok on November 3, 2017. After that Black Panther debuts on February 16, 2018, while Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4, 2018. Ant-Man and the Wasp is slated for July 6, 2018, followed by Captain Marvel on March 8, 2019.
