In the past, it has been possible to get Pokemon and Sailor Moon-themed eyewear in Japan – along with other limited-edition styles here and there – but a new store called “Animegane” (which is a combination of the word “anime” and “megane” – the Japanese word for “glasses”) is opening in Tokyo’s Akihabara that bills itself as the first anime-themed eyewear speciality store in the world. Yes, an entire store that’s dedicated to selling anime glasses. I’m going to go ahead and assume that claim about being the world’s first is true.

Seriously though, I’m surprised it took this long because anime-style frames look amazing. According to SN24, the store will include a wide array of officially licensed designs for prescription glasses and sunglasses that are based on properties such as Sword Art Online, Evangelion, Fate/stay night, Boruto, Girls und Panzer, Maho Girls Pretty Cure and more. Naturally, there will also be the aforementioned Sailor Moon and Pokemon options.

Prices for the glasses available in the Animegane store range from 3,000 yen ($26) all the way up to 23,000 yen ($205) for elaborate designs. The Evangelion range is an example of designs on the upper end of the pricing scale.
Animegane is set to open its brick and mortar store in Akihabara on July 15th, but there is an online option for people that are unable to travel to the store in person. At this point, we’re not sure what their international shipping situation is going to be like, so those of us outside of Japan might be stuck with whatever we can scrounge up on Etsy. Check out a few more examples of their eyewear designs in the gallery.
