The Japanese script – or kanji – for shonen literally translates to ‘boy’ or ‘youth’ in English. It’s characters then translate to ‘cartoon’ or ‘comic.’ So, when the entire phrase is put together, shonen refers directly to a ‘boy’s comic.’
