Attack on Titan has a healthy character roster, but there are only a couple whom fans consider leads. Eren Jeager is the show’s de facto lead, but his best friends Mikasa and Armin have also started to stand in the spotlight. Recently, the Attack on Titan creator did an interview with Illustration Magazine. It was during the interview Isayama was quoted saying that Reiner is now “another protagonist” of Attack on Titan.
For fans, Isayama’s announcement about Reiner may not be a surprising one; After all, Attack on Titan has not shied away from the Titan Shifter in recent chapters. The manga dedicated one of its new chapters to the Paradis warrior, and Reiner is also one of the anime’s most popular characters as well.
Isayama is also a big fan of Reiner. During an interview with Febri earlier this year, the artist revealed his favorite character as of late is the Titan Shifter.
“As time progresses, my favorite character keeps shifting. My favorite is Reiner at the moment – I want to draw more and more of Reiner,” Isayama explained.
Attack on Titan‘s second season focused on Reiner and his best friend Bertolt as their secret identities were revealed. Fans learned the pair were actually the Armored and Colossal Titans respectively, and Reiner’s brutal military skills led him to kidnap Eren for a spell.
In the manga, Reiner is in a much different place than where the anime is caught up to. The Paradis soldier is still alive and recouping from a costly battle which ended taking Bertolt’s life. With Eren and Reiner acting as foils to one another, their roles as protagonists are firmly cemented within the canon, so fans should expect to see much more of Reiner as the manga moves forward.
