Boruto: Naruto Next Generations has been out for a couple of months now, and one fan-war has continued to follow the show since. Well, that is until now. Thanks to one studious Reddit user, fans of the Naruto anime apparently sussed out the name of Boruto’s mysterious ocular jutsu.

User @NFB42 is the mastermind fans should thank for the Boruto boon. The fan noticed something particular in the latest episode of Boruto after it cut to a scene where a ninja named Toneri was present. The familiar character debuted in The Last: Naruto the Movie, and the Tenseigan user had this to say about Boruto as of late:
“ボルトの眼は浄眼だってよ”
Don’t read Japanese? That’s fine. According to @NFB42’s research, Toneri’s line translates to “Boruto’s eye is the Jougan.” The episode also sees Toneri explain that “The Gate that Nue opened has been sealed” and Boruto’s Jougan “won’t be coming up for awhile.”
Recently, Boruto’s ocular jutsu went into remission following the capture of Sumire and her dangerous summon Nue. The hero was able to see the girl’s ghostly chakra work with the Jougan, but the power has since faded as there is no otherworldly chakra to keep dibs on now.
As for what the Jougan can do, fans are still not 100% sure they have a full answer. As @NFB42 writes, the kanju used to write ‘Jou’ in Japanese is 浄. The character has the loose translation of pure or purification in English. In Japanese, the kanji is used to write out the term exorcism, and fans have been quick to connect Boruto’s power with such a task. After all, the boy was able to purify others when Nue’s ghostly chakra possessed them, and the ocular jutsu even allowed Boruto to pass through an liminal portal into the beast’s domain.
For now, it doesn’t look like fans will be getting answers about Boruto’s eye and its powers, but this new information has settled one on-going war. Fans have continued to go back and forth over whether the boy’s eye is an evolved version of either the Byakugan or Tenseigan given his heritage. Naruto carries blood of the Otsutsuki Clan while Hintata is a pure-bred Hyuga. The bloodline mix has been teased as an immensely powerful one, and it looks like the rumors were right. Apparently, the pairing left Boruto with an ocular jutsu that’s unlike any the Naruto universe has ever seen before.
