Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Movie Cuts Giyu’s Greatest Quote (And Undermines a Key Bond)

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle‘s trilogy just released its first installment in the U.S., and it’s already a massive box office hit. The film commences the most intense arc of the Demon Slayer as all the Corps members are scattered across the Infinity Castle. The stakes are higher than ever, and Muzan has no plans to let the Corps see the light of day. After painstakingly finding the Corps’ headquarters, he wants to wipe out every single member so no one will stand in his way again. However, the Demon Slayers have no intention of giving up at all, as they all engage in a final showdown against the villains.

All of the members, regardless of their rank, are fighting against the demons that are more powerful than ever. The Hashira and the main characters also came across the Upper Ranks, including Giyu Tomioka and Tanjiro Kamado, who fought Akaza. The fight was already teased in the key visuals and promotional videos, and it was worth the wait, at least in terms of animation. However, the animation studio removed one crucial scene of the fan-favorite Hashira that they really shouldn’t have.

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Skips This Heartbreaking Quote From Giyu

When the Demon Slayers received news of Muzan Kibutsuji entering the Ubuyashiki mansion, Giyu and Tanjiro were luckily together at the time. They headed towards the mansion together and were thrown inside the castle at the same time, which is why Giyu was not only able to find Tanjiro, but also stop him from falling to his death. They encountered the Upper Rank Three, Akaza, and made the best tag team in the entire series.

Both could use Water Breathing Style, and while Giyu had his years of experience as a Hashira and incredible battle IQ, Tanjiro relied on his Sun Breathing Style. They both covered for each other’s weakness and took turns fighting the demon so the other one could catch their breath. Everything was perfect about the fight, but the moment before Akaza’s backstory began, the anime completely removed Giyu’s heartbreaking scene from Chapter 154.

“I must pass on what was entrusted to me. Never again will I let family and friends die before my eyes. I will save him. I will save Tanjiro…the same way I was saved.”

โ€“ Giyu Tomioka

At that moment, Tanjiro had already fallen unconscious after severing Akaza’s head, while Giyu was severely injured. However, he refused to give up and let Tanjiro die in front of him. In the anime, he told Akaza to kill him before killing Tanjiro, after which, the demon imagined Koyuki grabbing his hand and stopping him. However, in the manga, we see that Giyu, despite his injuries, is still thinking about his past regrets, the times he let his sister and Sabito die in front of him.

He refuses to let his family or friends die in front of him again and resolves to save Tanjiro’s life. The scene not only highlights his determination to protect someone he cares about but also his character development. He transforms from someone who had given up on everything to having the same resolve to protect others as his sister and Sabito had.

This Moment Defined Giyu’s and Tanjiro’s Relationship

Giyu is a taciturn person, presenting himself as a kind but misunderstood supporting character in Demon Slayer. Whenever he talks, he often ends up saying things in a way that others can easily misunderstand. He never fit in well with the other Hashira, but deep down, he did care for the people around him. That also goes for Tanjiro, the boy he saved over two years ago. Giyu saw Tanjiro when he was at his lowest, and he watched him grow into a powerful Demon Slayer, someone at the same level as a Hashira.

Giyu rarely showed up throughout Tanjiro’s journey, but he was still at his side, even if it meant putting his life on the line to vouch for Nezuko. He never said it out loud, but the quote from Chapter 154 confirmed that Giyu never saw Tanjiro as simply a fellow Corps member, but someone he considered a family member or a friend. When Tanjiro was in danger, his first thought wasn’t to defeat Akaza, but to protect the unconscious boy in front of him. Tanjiro felt the same when he put Giyu out of Akaza’s attack range before passing out.

Their sheer resolve to not give up, their bond to put each other’s safety first, and their strength are what helped them defeat the Upper Rank Three, who couldn’t even be killed after getting decapacitated. It’s exactly what triggered Akaza’s memories as well, and gave Giyu the peace he needed before dying.
