Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle’s Tanjiro and Giyu Discuss The Series’ Grand Finale (Exclusive)

The time has almost come for fans of the Demon Slayer Corps as Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle will hit North American theaters on September 12th. With this next movie in the shonen series acting as the first entry of the finale trilogy, emotions are running high for both the characters trapped in Muzan’s headquarters and the voice actors that bring said anime figures to life. Recently, we had the opportunity to chat with Zach Aguilar and Johnny Yong Bosch, the actors who portray Tanjiro and Giyu, about not just saying goodbye to Demon Slayer, but returning to their roles one more time.

Johnny Yong Bosch is no stranger to the anime world, voicing major characters such as Trigun’s Vash the Stampede, Bleach’s Ichigo Kurosaki, Devil May Cry’s Dante, and Dragon Ball Super’s Broly, to name a few. With so many roles under his belt, this fact doesn’t mean that Johnny doesn’t miss his characters when he says goodbye to them, which is the case with Demon Slayer’s Giyu, “I mean, I’ve been waiting for this film at least for Giyu to get to this moment for a long time, so, you know, being here now, it’s like, oh, it’s awesome, but then knowing that, oh gosh, we’re at the end now. My daughter ended up getting the manga. Well, she got it after I saw a spoiler. So, I was just researching the character and just trying to figure out, alright, what’s he about, you know, and then I saw some stuff, and then ended up getting her the manga set, and then kind of going through it.”

On the flip side, Zach Aguilar, voice of Demon Slayer’s star Tanjiro, was sad to bid a fond farewell to the shonen series. “I mean, I think being a fan of the story and the manga in general, it’s been awesome to see it all adapted, and I think the word, for me, is bittersweet.”

Researching the Demon Slayer Manga

Aguilar also noted that while he reads the Demon Slayer manga, “I think that’s the hardest part, and I know some actors choose not to read the source material because of that, and because they want to live in the moment of the character. If you have in your head how you’re gonna do a specific scene, exactly like how you’re gonna read it, maybe you’re looking at the manga, and our lines in the dub might, like, they could vary slightly. I think that’s the tricky part of being an actor and being, like, really passionate about the material. You don’t want to think too hard, you don’t want to over-prepare for what you’re going to do in the movie.”

Zach then further explored the idea that the film trilogy would be Tanjiro’s swan song and how that affected his performance, “I know this is the final battle. It’s huge, and when I stepped into the booth, I’m like, ‘okay, I have to be prepared to just live in the moment and to take the direction, and trust the director, and be guided. I think this is some of my best work as Tanjiro, and I’m so happy with how everything came out.”

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle arrives in theaters on September 12th.
