Dragon Ball Super: New Promo Hints That Broly May Become Canon

Whether you love or hate him, Broly has become one of Dragon Ball's most popular characters since his debut back in 1993. The hulking Saiyan has managed to elude the canon of Dragon Ball for decades now, but fans fear that his status may soon change. Dragon Ball Super has been gearing up to debut a major Broly tie-in with its ongoing 'Universal Survival' arc for some time. And, now, a new promo for the anime's next episode hints that Broly may get referenced outright in the series.
Recently, new synopses for Dragon Ball Super were released over in Japan, and the reports featured a blurb on the lady Super Saiyans from Universe 6. Both Kale and Caulifla had the Super Saiyans forms described briefly, and Kale's made a very peculiar reference.
You can check out the promo's translated descriptions below:
"Caulifla: The younger sister of Renso, captain of the Sadal Defense Squad. She hides dormant power that surpasses her brother!! Caulifla's Super Saiyan form: This transformation turns her hair gold and makes her look even cooler and more imposing!
Kale: This looks like that legendary Saiyan?! Like Caulifla, don't take your eyes off this female Saiyan!! A dark-skinned beauty…!!"
It's hard to miss the implications tied into Kale's description; The magazine explicitly states that Kale looks like "that" legendary Saiyan rather than a legendary Saiyan. The specificity of the blurb has got fans wondering if Dragon Ball Super plans to reference Broly as the legendary Saiyan written about in this description. And, if it does name-drop the character, then Broly will find himself thrown in the Dragon Ball canon.
To date, Broly has only existed in Dragon Ball Z films and video games; The character hasn't been featured in any content written or inspired by creator Akira Toriyama. Dragon Ball Super is not penned directly by the creator, but the artist is directly involved with its content. If Dragon Ball Super winds up referencing Broly in its anime or manga, then fans are going to be left wondering how the Super Saiyan fits into the franchise's timeline.
Still, plenty of fans are hoping this promo is just a one-off teaser to get fans interested in Kale's impending form. Audiences have known that a female Super Saiyan who looked like Broly would be coming to Dragon Ball Super for months now. It's very possible the anime will canonically introduce the Legendary Super Saiyan form through Kale and leave it as that. But, no matter what happens, fans can expect for the form's debut to stir up some controversy.
You can read the synopsis for "You're the 10th Warrior! Goku Visits Freeza!!" below:
"Goku goes to Hell to recruit Freeza! Unable to awaken Buu, Goku selects his archenemy Freeza as Buu's replacement! How will Freeza respond to Goku's unexpected invitation...?!
Universe 6 This Week: Kale's true power unleashed! Counting on Kale's hidden potential, Caulifla trains her to become Super Saiyan! As a result, she uncovers power that terrifies even her Universe 6 comrades!!"
