If anyone has a feel for who Beerus is, it’s Jason Douglas, but that doesn’t mean he takes voicing the character in Dragon Ball Super lightly.

In fact, it is quite the opposite. ComicBook.com had the chance to catch up with Douglas at New York Comic Con, where he explained why it is so important for him and the team behind Dragon Ball Super to get the beloved and immensely powerful character right.
“I will just tell you from the get-go that there was a sense of how important this show is to the fans and needing to really get it right, and the thing is once you get into the booth and start watching the animation, there’s so much there that can kind of like motivate you and inspire you and sort of give you the room to play,” Douglas said. “Because I think it’s so well written and it’s so well rendered in terms of how they animate this guy, so for me, that’s kind of the palette that I work from. Is that what do we have here and what is possible, and I feel like my job is to jump in with my voice, breath that character into kind of the contours of what’s already there.”
While Douglas is a fan of what’s in the script, he does get to play around with how he brings that to life onscreen. He gets even more flexibility when you consider how unpredictable Beerus can be at any given moment.
“And we play around with things,” Douglas said. “We throw away a lot of stuff. Stuff that’s like ah, tried that it didn’t work, but lets try it five different ways or ten different ways, and the one that works we’re going to use, and sometimes I feel like a scene gives Beerus a lot of room to just really play, like relish being who he is.”
Douglas has voiced the character of Beerus in several Dragon Ball projects, including Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods and Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F, but he’s taken the character to another level in Dragon Ball Super.
You can watch the entire interview with Douglas in the video above, and you can catch Beerus in action on Dragon Ball Super, which airs Sundays on the Fuji Television Network.
