Evangelion Returns to Theaters Next Month (But There’s a Catch)

Neon Genesis Evangelion is arguably one of the most influential anime ever made, and its influence over fans continues as the movies are about to return to theaters. Not to make you feel old, but Evangelion turns 30 this year. To celebrate that epic milestone, every movie in the long-running sci-fi franchise will return to theaters over the course of several months. Hideaki Anno’s prolific series first premiered back in 1995, as fans were introduced to Denji, Asuka, Rei, Misato, and one of the most confusing sci-fi plots of all time. Three decades later, fans are still consumed by the hidden meaning of Neon Genesis Evangelion (even if there isn’t actually one) and constantly rewatch the series, as well as the movie recaps and sequels for clues. Now, fans can re-experience the Evangelion franchise on the biggest screen possible, but there’s a catch.

The “Monthly Eva EVANGELION 30th MOVIE Fest. 2025-2026” (that’s a lengthy title) takes place between October 2025 and February 2026, with all of the Evangelion movies screening in select theaters. But, as widespread as the Evangelion fandom is, the screenings are only taking place in Japan (at least, so far). Starting with Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth – “DEATH๏ผˆTRUE๏ผ‰ยฒ๏ผ†REBIRTH” version in October up until Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time – version 3.0๏ผ‹1.01 in February 2026, every movie in the franchise will screen for a single week in select theaters. A new trailer for the “Monthly Eva EVANGELION 30th MOVIE Fest. 2025-2026” was recently released on the official khara YouTube channel.

Evangelion Remains as Mysterious and Endearing 30 Years Later

As previously mentioned, the Evangelion franchise is one of the most prolific anime sci-fi stories, along with the likes of Akira and Ghost in the Shell. Heavily inspired by Christian imagery and philosophy, the story of Angels seeking to destroy humanity, with humans developing the EVA project to stop them, has influenced generations of storytellers in the three decades since its premiere.

As well as the beautiful animation by Gainax and the psychologically scarring story, the lack of overt answers and closure has left the fan base desperately scrambling to deduce the true meaning of the series. While Hideaki Anno has previously revealed that the series isn’t that deep, the mystery of Evangelion has created a long-lasting legacy that few other anime can match.
