Netflix has seen serious success not just with some of its big live-action properties such as Stranger Things and Squid Game, but in the world of animation. As it stands, KPop Demon Hunters is the most-watched movie created by the platform. Unfortunately, while animation is doing quite well on the streaming service, it doesn’t mean that every animated original will dodge the cancellation bullet. In a recent report, it appears as though one of the latest video game adaptations will be ending its story with the release of its second season.

Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft arrived last year with eight episodes, canonically taking place following the conclusion of the recent video game trilogy. In the series, an older and more experienced Croft, played by Marvel’s Hayley Atwell, continues to search for treasure while dodging threats on her life in the process. For the second season, Netflix is planning to release the new episodes on December 11th this winter, making good on their promise of renewal for the video game adaptation. Luckily, the series released a new description of what lies in wait for Lara on her final animated adventure on Netflix, for now.
“When adventurer Lara Croft (voiced by Hayley Atwell) discovers a trail of stolen African Orisha masks, she joins forces with her best friend Sam (Karen Fukuhara) to retrieve the precious artifacts. Lara’s thrilling new adventure takes her around the globe as she delves deeper into the hidden secrets of Orisha history, dodging the machinations of a dangerous and enigmatic billionaire who wants the masks for herself, while discovering these relics contain dark secrets and a power that defies logic. Power that may, in fact, be divine.”
Lara Croft’s Live Action News

Recently, it was confirmed that Amazon is moving forward with a live-action Tomb Raider series, being the first time that Lara Croft has been in the “real world” since 2018’s “Tomb Raider” film. So far, star Phoebe Waller-Bridge has been confirmed to play a big part in the creation of the series, while Amazon has already found its titular star. Game of Thrones’ Sophie Turner is set to play Croft in the upcoming adaptation, though no release window has been revealed as of the writing of this article.
For those who are sad to see Croft depart from Netflix, the streaming service is still working on quite a few video game adaptations in the future. Devil May Cry’s second season will make its debut in 2026, while video game players will have the chance to dive into the world of Splinter Cell: Deathwatch when it debuts on October 14th next month. Even with Tomb Raider departing, it’s far from the last time we’ll see Netflix take a crack at creating new takes on classic video games.
