Demon Slayer has been taking over the box office since its new movie hit theaters across Japan earlier this Summer, but with the launch of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle across the United States and Canada this weekend the film has already broken an all-time box office record for anime in the U.S. overall. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle is the first film in a brand new trilogy of movies adapting the massive Infinity Castle arc from Koyoharu Gotoge’s original manga series, and Tanjiro Kamado and the other Demon Slayers are now in the final fights of their lives.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle had already broken a box office record in the United States this year with the best opening night for a Sony Pictures Entertainment distributed film, but it’s also done much better than that. It has been such an impressive opening night release for anime that with an estimated $33 million from Friday (and an estimated $75 million USD being possible for the weekend overall), Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle has gone on to already break the record for the biggest opening weekend for any anime film in United States’ box office history.
Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Breaks Pokemon’s All-Time Record

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle has already gone on to break all sorts of major box office records with just its run in Japan alone (even dethroning Spirited Away to be the second highest grossing film of all time in the region), and it looks like that success is going to continue with its domestic launch as well. With just an estimated $33 million USD for its opening night, the film has officially topped Pokemon the First Movie’s former record of $31 million USD when it opened back in 1999.
This is a huge jump in interest for Demon Slayer’s franchise overall too. Because while its last major feature film release, Mugen Train, eventually went on to be one of the most successful anime films of all time, it only opened in the United States with just under $10 million USD. This goes to show how much bigger Demon Slayer’s fandom has become over the years, and just how much those same fans had been excited to jump into what could ultimately be the grand finale for this anime franchise overall.
What’s Next for Demon Slayer?

Now that Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle has the most successful box office opening night for an anime film in United States history, there’s a very high ceiling for how much success the film could potentially have when it’s all said and done. Estimates for the overall weekend are calling for as high as $75 million USD being possible, and that would make for a major record in and of itself when it comes to anime releases in the United States. Which is likely going to get a lot of attention from Hollywood studios.
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle still has two more films to release before it completes its trilogy, but release windows have yet to be revealed for the follow ups at this time. But with this brand being as strong as it is, there’s a good chance that there’s a studio out there trying to license the rights for potential live-action adaptations for bigger chances at box office success in the future. Especially if the demand manages to stay as strong for all three of these new films.
