Sword Art Online is showing Captain Jack Sparrow who’s boss. Well, for the most part, at least. The anime franchise has seen its long-awaited film Ordinal Scale hit foreign markets this month, and one European country showed the feature big love. Italy made Sword Art Online feel right at home when its film opened in its theaters, and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales could not compete.

Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale opened in Italy on June 13, and its box office haul managed to shake off Pirates of the Caribbean 5. According to box office totals, The Mummy came in first place as it made its debut. Sword Art Online came in second while Pirates of the Caribbean and Wonder Woman took third and fourth place respectively.
Looking at the numbers, Sword Art Online did a fine job in chasing down Hollywood’s most famous pirates. The blockbuster earned just over 107,000 euros while the Sword Art Online film earned nearly $140,000 for its limited release. As for The Mummy, the action reboot opened in Italy to $168,000 euros.
So far, Sword Art Online has managed to accrue plenty of cash abroad. Ordinal Scale has earned about $20 million at the international box office. U.S. audiences shelled out over $1 million for the anime feature, and its native Japanese followers broke the bank to catch the flick.
The movie hit Japanese theaters back in February, and it quickly broke records. The film was the first anime movie to hit the number one spot for both weekend attendance and box office totals. In fact, Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale even threatened to budge Your Name out of its lofty box office status thanks to its popularity. So far, the movie has sold about 500,000 tickets worldwide since its opening weekend.
