Last year, the anime fandom was thrown into confusion when news broke that Sunrise was working on a new Code Geass anime project. The franchise, which went silent back in 2008, was assumed to be completed following the final ending of Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2. However, the company let fans know several anime recap movies will be be published summarizing the franchise before Code Geass: Lelouch of the Revival hits televisions. However, it might be awhile before the project gets released.

It's no secret; A lot of time is needed to make a quality anime regardless of its length. On average, it can take at least six months to create 10-12 anime episodes. Traditionally, the Code Geass anime series have housed 25 episodes per season, so it would not be unheard of for the new anime to take at least a year to produce.

Recently, netizens uncovered information which lends itself to the year-long production schedule. Japan is currently doing a full rerun of Code Geass for fans, and the project will debut its second episode soon. One episode will be shown a week, so the marathon will continue for at least 48 weeks barring no breaks. It would make sense of Sunrise to debut the new Code Geass anime shortly after the rerun ends to ensure the franchise is still on fans' minds. With only 52 weeks in a year, it is look like the show's rerun will push the new anime's release to a year from now at the soonest.

As for the previous Code Geass anime titles, they have premiered during different cours. The first anime made its debut in October 2006 while the season premiered in April 2008. The spring and fall cours are competitive ones in the anime industry, so it makes sense Code Geass would want to test its popularity against other big-name series.

Right now, reports indicate that the new Code Geass anime is already in production. If work is already far along, the project may debut as early as January 2018, but fans agree an April 2018 premiere is more likely. For now, audiences will just have to wait until Sunrise drops some more sought-after information about the anime.

If you have not caught up on all things Code Geass, then you still have time. The series is a long one, but it's a well-received one. Aside from the first two seasons, there is another spin-off OVA series which fans were gifted recently.

Code Geass: Akito the Exiled is a five-part miniseries that takes place between the two full seasons. Funimation has plans to release the OVA series on home video early next year, so fans will be able to binge it before Code Geass: Lelouch of the Revival rears its head.
