In a viral marketing move similar to the one we saw yesterday from the Man of Steel movie campaign, the filmmakers behind Pacific Rim released their first trailer today after a countdown by a fictional, pseudoscientific organization (in this case, the Pan Pacific Defense Corps, who track, prevent and fight off Kaiju attacks in the forthcoming film from Hellboy director Guillermo del Toro. At 7 p.m. tonight, the first teaser for the film went live at the fake organization's website, where you can also explore for more Easter eggs (Jaeger blueprints, which we've already shown off as they were released). The video itself is embedded below. Both Man of Steel and Pacific Rim are being produced and distributed by Legendary Pictures and Warner Brothers, the people behind this week's big release, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. It's been confirmed already that the Man of Steel trailer would screen in front of that title, but is it possible that this trailer could be in theaters this weekend, too? Earlier today, the studio also released an official image of the Jaeger Gypsy, which is shown above. Pacific Rim opens worldwide on July 12, 2013. The trailer is below, followed by the studio's official description.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse.0comments
