The event took place outside of Nexen headquarters in Calgary, Canada. Nexen is an oil and gas company, and their employees banded together not only to set the world record but to also raise money for the United Way.
Now, one might expect that the reason there were 542 people dressed as Batman is because the old record was 541 people dressed as Batman, but it turns out the old record was 250 people dressed as Batman. So the Nexen employees not only beat the world record, they crushed it.

Of course, the Nexen employees have previous experience dressing up like superheroes. Back in 2011, they set the world record for most people dressed up as Superman. However, that record has since been eclipsed by a group in the UK.
