Aside from short-lived deaths, there’s no trope comic books love more than acronyms. Able to turn even the simplest of words into the most serpentine set of initials, acronyms have been a world-building staple for DC and Marvel since Nick Fury was out howling with his commandos.

And tonight, pop culture’s most famous acronym, S.H.I.E.L.D. returns to television with the midseason premiere of Marvel’s Agents of Shield. But before you tune in, ask yourself: Do you even know what S.H.I.E.L.D. stands for? If your guess stops short at “Strategic…something,” don’t worry, you’re not the only one. In fact, ask any comic reader worth their salt to unpack an acronym, and most will usually com up empty-handed.
