The series premiere of the television adaptation of Neil Gaiman‘s American Gods is less than two months away, and the forthcoming Starz drama has been ramping up in the promotional material ahead of the show’s release.
Based on Gaiman’s Hugo Award-winning novel of the same name, American Gods will focus on a clash of mythologies come to life in a world where belief gives power to the gods.

To celebrate the release, the American Gods Twitter account just posted a motion picture featuring Ian McShane‘s Mr. Wednesday and Cloris Leachman’s Zarya celebrating the cold weather.
Sometimes a god just has to revel in their feigned humanity from time to time, I guess. It’s the little things that count.
The series will focus on Ricky Whittle’s character Shadow Moon, a former prisoner who becomes Mr. Wednesday’s accomplice in gathering some old friends.
But these aren’t just any old friends—they’re old gods from different pantheons, depowered and withered due to mankind’s lack of belief in their ways. Instead, humanity has turned to new gods such as Media, played by the X-Files Gillian Anderson.
The first season consists of eight episodes, and it’s unclear whether those will cover Gaiman’s entire novel or just a portion. Gaiman has also expressed interest in writing a second novel. So we might just have another Game of Thrones situation on our hands. Time will tell.
American Gods will premiere on Starz in April 2017.

American Gods has been translated into over 30 languages and earned numerous accolades including Hugo, Nebula and Bram Stoker Awards for Best Novel. The plot posits a war brewing between old and new gods: the traditional gods of mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs. Its protagonist, Shadow Moon, is an ex-con who becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to Mr. Wednesday, a conman but in reality one of the older gods, on a cross-country mission to gather his forces in preparation to battle the new deities.
American Gods is produced by FremantleMedia North America. Bryan Fuller (Hannibal, Pushing Daisies, Heroes) and Michael Green (The River, Kings, Heroes) are writers and showrunners. David Slade (Hannibal, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) is directing the pilot and additional episodes. FMNA’s Craig Cegielski and Stefanie Berk are executive producing the series along with Fuller, Green, Slade and Neil Gaiman.
