Starz has released a new trailer for the first season of American Gods. The new trailer shows the bloodier side of the modern fantasy series, and Neil Gaiman, who wrote the original novel, gave it his own stamp of approval via Twitter.

In American Gods, when Shadow Moon is released from prison, he meets the mysterious Mr. Wednesday and a storm begins to brew. Little does Shadow know, this storm will change the course of his entire life. Left adrift by the recent, tragic death of his wife, and suddenly hired as Mr. Wednesday’s bodyguard, Shadow finds himself in the center of a world that he struggles to understand. It’s a world where magic is real, where the Old Gods fear both irrelevance and the growing power of the New Gods, like Technology and Media. Mr. Wednesday seeks to build a coalition of Old Gods to defend their existence in this new America, and reclaim some of the influence that they’ve lost. As Shadow travels across the country with Mr. Wednesday, he struggles to accept this new reality, and his place in it.

Gaiman’s original American Gods novel was published in 2001. American Gods won both the Hugo Award and the Nebula Award for best novel. The novel got an expanded 10th Anniversary re-release in 2011 with a full cast audio recording from Harper Audio.
It was around the same time that Gaiman began openly expressing interest in adapting American Gods into a television series. The series was originally in development at HBO, but in 2016 Gaiman announced that the project was still ongoing but not longer with HBO. In 2014, and HBO executive said the project was abandoned because they struggled with the script. Gaiman is said to be very involved with the series production and has given the showrunners leeway to incorporate material from the spinoff novel Anansi Boys.

In early 2014, Fremantle Media acquired the project. Later that same year it was announced that Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller and Logan co-writer Michael Green would develop the series for Starz.
American Gods is created by Bryan Fuller and Michael Greene, who wrote the first episode and serve as showrunners. Gaiman, Greene, and Fuller serve as executive producers along with Craig Cegielski, Stefanie Berk, and Thom Beers. The series stars Ricky Whittle, Ian McShane, Emily Browning, Bruce Langley, Pablo Schreiber and Yetide Badaki.
The eight-episode first season of American Gods premieres April 30 on Starz.
