As expected, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 scored the biggest opening weekend of 2014 so far. After a strong start with a $55 million opening day on Friday, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 grossed an estimated $123 million at the U.S. box office over the weekend.
In what has been a relatively light year at the U.S. box office in regards to opening weekends, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 is only the second movie this year to open in the triple digit millions. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 beat the previous 2014 record holder Transformers: Age of Extinction, which opened to just over $100 million at the U.S box office.
