He may no longer direct the Dark Knight’s cinematic adventures, but Chris Nolan still harbors enormous clout over the Caped Crusader.

As IGN reported from a Hollywood Reporter roundtable discussion, not even The Lego Movie could produce a celluloid Batman without the director’s blessing. While discussing the process of making the Lego Movie, producer Dan Lin explained that he had to pitch Warner Bros. and Chris Nolan on their snarky Batman interpretation.
As Lin explained, he, along with co-directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord, told Batman’s top brass that that their vigilante would exist in a separate a universe.
“We pitched a different kind of Batman. We said, ‘You guys have your live-action Batman, we have what we called the LEGO Batman. A Batman that’s very self-aware. That is, you know, a bit of a jerk at times.’ As soon as they understood there are different universes, that worked out okay,” Lin said. But that was a big challenge going to all the different rightsholders, saying, ‘This is how we’re going to take your character and Lego-ize it.’”
Of course, the legacy of Lego Batman will continue in the 2017 spinoff Lego Batman film, giving this Dark Knight an entire feature film to revel in his poor attitude. Lin said that the film is now “deep in production,” with The Lego Movie’s animation supervisor Chris Mckay directing and Will Arnett reprising his role as Batman. LEGO Movie directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord will help produce the film while they work on their sequel to The LEGO Movie.
But this whole idea of a “separate universe” leaves us curious. Would it be too far-fetched to think we could have an entire DC LEGO reality exist in the multiverse one day? Someone get Grant Morrison and the “Multiversity” editors on the phone, STAT.
