Deadpool Movie: Easter Eggs Explained

Deadpool hits theaters everywhere this week and is already breaking box office records. Deadpool is known for his quirky humor, fourth wall breaking wise cracks and of course, Easter eggs and pop culture references. Naturally, his first full length film is no different.

Below is a list of Easter Eggs to look out for when you see Deadpool with a little bit of background about why each of them are so badass!

Stan Lee

Stan Lee (legendary Marvel Comics creator), continues his trend of cameo appearances throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In Deadpool he moonlights as a strip club announcer … the very same club that Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), works in.

Rob Liefeld

 

The co-creator of Deadpool himself gets two cameos in this flick including his name on a totally-not-Starbucks-coffee-cup and a name drop – spoken by the Merc With The Mouth himself.

Fabian Nicieza

 

The co-creator of Deadpool’s names appear reversed in two separate street signs over the bridge on which Deadpool spends a lot of the movie.

Tim Miller

 

The director of Deadpool has a street sign of his last name appearing just to screen right of Fabian Nicieza’s.

Chimichanga

 

“Chimichanga!” is, arguably, the most recognizable Deadpool catchphrase and Ryan Reynold delivers it right to camera.

Vancouver

 

Follow the logic on this a little bit: Wade Wilson became Deadpool through his involvement with the Weapon X Program. The Weapon X Program is based in Canada. The Deadpool movie filmed in Vancouver, Canada. Perhaps because of financial incentives, perhaps in honor of Deadpool’s origin.

With Great Power Comes Great Irresponsibility

 

A play on the popular Spider-Man mantra: “With great power comes great responsibility.”

Worm

 

Originally an X-Men character who became a Deadpool character who was in The Workshop at the same time as Wade Wilson and befriended him, who has been part of Marvel Comics since 1989. Played by Hugh Scott in Deadpool.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

 

Deadpool opines the eponymous character’s first movie appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine not once, but twice! In dialogue Wade references that someone tried to sew his mouth shut and it didn’t work and during a flashback of Wade living with Vanessa a post-op Deadpool action figure appears on camera briefly.

Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters

 

The X-Men academy does appear on screen in a very recognizable incarnation from fans of the previous movies and Deadpool goes on to remark that it’s interesting to only see two X-Men and that, perhaps, Fox couldn’t afford to include anymore in his movie.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

Yes, Deadpool has an after-the-credits scene as audiences have come to expect from Marvel movies of all stripes. The one that I saw was an homage to the after-the-credits scene in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off with Deadpool appearing in a suburban hallway in a bathrobe admonishing the audience and ordering them to go home.

“Don’t make the suit green or animated”

Just as Wade Wilson is admitted to The Workshop he remarks that if he is going to be made into a superhero he doesn’t want a suit that it either green or animated in an obvious shot at his time as Hal Jordan in 2011’s Green Lantern movie.

127 Hours

 

In an attempt to free himself from handcuffs – the other end of which are cuffed to Colossus – Deadpool goes all 127 Hours and cuts off his own hand in homage to the 2010 drama starring James Franco.

X Gon’ Give It To Ya

DMX’s X Gon’ Give It To Ya plays during one of Deadpool’s more exciting action scenes with a correlation to be drawn between Deadpool and his one-time alias Agent X.

McAvoy vs Stewart

In response to being told that he is going to visit with Professor X Deadpool asks whether that would be “McAvoy or Stewart?” because he can’t keep all the X-Men Cinematic Universes straight.
