During an interview with the Los Angeles Times, no doubt scheduled to coincide with this morning’s Oscar nominations, Django Unchained comics adaptor Reginald Hudlin addressed the issue of race as it appears in the film.”It’s a Quentin Tarantino movie,” Hudlin told Hero Complex, the LA Times‘s comics blog. “It would be different if we were telling a story about people just being victims, but this movie is sort of the antidote to that. This is a straight-up hero, people fighting back and winning.”Hudlin, who has never been known to shy away from issues of race in comics before, said that he and Tarantino actually have quite a bit in common, including Tarantino’s interest in Western comics.”Quentin and I, we love to talk and one of the things we love to talk about is comic books, specifically western comic books,” Hudlin said. “The main thing was to be as faithful as possible to the original script.”Western comics, eh? Wouldn’t Jonah Hex have been better with a little Tarantino?
