Whovians, brace yourselves. There could be some major shake-ups coming to Doctor Who. The beloved series continues to grow in popularity by the day, but it doesn’t look like one of the stars is sure whether he’ll stick with the show. In a recent interview with Wales Online, the Doctor himself confessed he hadn’t made up his mind about staying on as the Doctor.

“I’ve been asked to stay on and I haven’t made my mind up about that yet, mainly because I don’t want to have to make that decision,” he admitted. “I’m trying to avoid it!”

UP NEXT: Will Matt Smith Return To Doctor Who?

Of course, fans of Doctor Who were not wanting to hear this news. Peter Capaldi was selected to become the Twelfth Doctor after a painstaking search following Matt Smith’s exit, and he’s ushered in a new era for the series. When Doctor Who‘s next season hits BBC in 2017, the Doctor will be joined by a brand-new companion played by Pearl Mackie.

If Capaldi does return to Doctor Who, then it will be become of how much fan he had on set.

Doctor Who does take a lot of time, but it’s a wonderful use of it,” he said. “It’s special. I’m lucky enough to be in touch with other Doctors, and we all agree how extraordinary it is to be in this position. To decide to leave is a tough decision for everybody. [It was] very tough for [showrunner] Steven, so I’m just putting it off for as long as possible.”

So, it is very possible that Capaldi may stick around the series beyond Season 10. That would comfort fans who have been hearing rumors float about that the BBC plans to give the show a new slate. As reported by Doctor Who TV, rumors began popping up online after insiders said the network’s bosses wants to give Doctor Who a clean slate.

“Insiders say the Broadchurch writer will have a “clean slate” to start afresh for his first series โ€“ rather bad news for actress Pearl Mackie, who plays new assistant Bill in Steven Moffat’s last run, currently filming for next year,” the site wrote.

“Pearl, 29, yet to be seen by viewers, is said to have been signed on a one-year contract and is expected to depart with Peter Capaldi , 58, and Moffat after 2017’s Christmas special.”

Fans worried the change was due to Doctor Who‘s lagging ratings. The show reached peak records when David Tennant and Matt Smith helmed the series as Doctors with their youthful, vibrant energy. Whovians have enjoyed the shift in tone that came with Capaldi’s entrance, but only time will tell how long the actor will bring his distinctive style to the sci-fi classic.
