Boyega has only been acting for a few years, first appearing on the big screen in 2011’s Attack the Block, a low budget scifi flick that featured Boyega as a small-time gangbanger whose boys have to fight off an alien invasion. After a few more small film appearances, plus recurring guest roles on Becoming Human and 24: Live Another Day on television, 2015 was Boyega’s breakout year.
Starring as Finn in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Boyega was the first named and unmasked Stormtrooper in the franchise’s big screen history. As part of the new generation of heroes, the torch was passed – literally for a time, as Boyega’s character was one of four people to wield the fabled lightsaber that once belonged to Anakin Skywalker, and his son Luke later.
He’ll next appear in the 2016 film The Circle, and is currently filming Star Wars: Episode VIII, his second film as Finn, for a December 15, 2017 release.
