Does the word ‘fun’ come to mind when you think about the Jurassic Park series? The thrilling, sci-fi franchise has four films to its name thanks to its recent revival with Jurassic World. Filled with pre-historic danger and tense action, some fans would say the films are more terrifying than they are fun – but J.A. Bayona is not one of those people. The director is in-charge of Jurassic World 2, and the acclaimed visionary has said he hopes to make a fun dinosaur romp with the next movie.

In an interview with The Playlist, Bayona took time to talk about his involvement with the Jurassic World trilogy and said he’s ready to take a break from darker projects. “After doing ‘The Impossible’ and ‘A Monster Calls’ I said, ‘I want to have fun now.,’” Bayona joked.

“So, let’s do a dinosaur film with Spielberg. It’s great, but at the same time it’s massive and way bigger than [the last] one. “

In the past, Bayona and producer Colin Trevorrow have been vocal about how the sequel will shift in tone from the first. Earlier this month, the director told Coming Soon that the second movie is headed in a very different direction.

“I think it’s very interesting where the new movie is heading. It’s so different from the other films, it talks a lot about the moment we live in right now. It’s darkerโ€ฆ but at the same time it’s going to be a lot of fun. It’s a blockbuster, you have Chris Pratt, it’s a great adventure, but it’s very interesting the way the film is darker than the other ones,” he said.

Bayona reiterated those ideas in his most recent interview, saying that Jurassic World 2 will tie the new trilogy and the original together. He said, “I think Colin did a great job in the first one finding the balance between what people are expecting and what people are being again. I was kind of surprised when he pitched me the story because it leads the story to a place that we’ve never seen before and it brings some of the most important elements from the other films and makes something with them. I thought that was very interesting. It’s the second chapter of a trilogy so it gets the story to a place that wants you leaving more and more.”

Production on Jurassic World 2 is set to kick-off next spring, so fans can expect to get more updates on the highly anticipated film once the new year rolls in. For now, film lovers and dinosaur enthusiasts will just have to wait and see how Bayone treads the fine line between fun and fear for fans everywhere.
