JoBlo reports that the R rating is due to “intense sequences of violence throughout, and for disturbing images.”
Most big-budget action franchises aim for a PG-13 rating, since it makes for easier access by teenagers, but there seems to be a trend with films like Mad Max and possibly Deadpool aiming for the R, which is likely to please hardcore fans at the cost of a few casual viewers.
The MPAA also came back with a ratings verdict on Peanuts, granting the film a G rating.
