New Avatar Theme Park Details Coming In November

Do you remember Avatar? The 2009 film still stands as the highest-grossing film ever at the global box office, and James Cameron’s script continues to intrigue fans with its immersive storyline. Avatar also famously pushed the boundaries of what CG animation and 3D films could do, ultimately ushering in a new era of filmmaking tech. But, after nearly 7 years, many moviegoers have all but forgotten the seriously lucrative film. It seems a well-timed reminder will be heading fans’ way soon though.

For some, it might be surprising to hear Walt Disney World’s plans for an Avatar theme park are well underway. And, what’s more, James Cameron is set to reveal new details about Pandora: The World of Avatar in just a couple months.

io9 is exclusively reporting that James will be attending the upcoming D23 Destination D event alongside Disney Imagineer Joe Rohde and producer Jon Landau. The event will take place in November at Disney’s Contemporary Resort at Walt Disney World. So, naturally, fans are curious to see what the trio is planning to reveal.

Though the park was first pitched back in 2011, updates on Pandora: The World of Avatar have been slow and very infrequent. Disney presented a first-look presentation about the park at Japan’s D23 Expo in 2013, and James confirmed then the 12-acre park would feature ground-breaking technology and be housed within Animal Kingdom. Then, at the 2015 D23 Expo, Disney finally confirmed two park attractions: Avatar: Flight of Passage and Na’vi River Journey. Several pieces of concept art have also been released which spotlight Avatar’s massive universe and bioluminescent plants. You can check out the images in our gallery below!

With some of the world’s brightest, most creative minds working on the park, fans are hopeful the attraction’s debut in 2017 will be worth the wait. Of course,Pandora: The World of Avatar could also provide some much-needed hype for the Avatar films. With James having confirmed four Avatar sequels, the park’s opening would coincide perfectly with the projects’ respective releases in December 2018, 2020, 2022, and 2023.
