Joe Pytka, the director behind 1996’s Space Jam, doesn’t foresee a positive outcome for the newly-announced sequel, which will star NBA superstar LeBron James (Trainwreck) and be helmed by Star Trek Beyond‘s Justin Lin.
“Don’t do it. It’s doomed,” Pytka told The Hollywood Reporter. “Michael Jordan was the biggest star on the planet.”

THR adds, “His point being that James already has been eclipsed by Steph Curry, and it will be at least two years before the film can be completed.”
LeBron is still considered by most to be the best pound-for-pound basketball player in the world, but now Steph Curry of the Golden State Warriors is considered the best offensive player and his popularity with fans has surpassed King James.
“When we did Space Jam, there was a perfect storm of players and ex-players available โ Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing,” Pytka said. “They all had a persona that complemented the film. There are none around like that now.”
