The new Power Rangers movie is continuing to resonate with longtime, and even attracted a healthy new crop of viewers. Now, as talk inevitably turns toward plans for the sequel films saga, there’s been one big issue that has captured a lot of attention in fan chat threads: the gender of the next Green Ranger.

(SPOILERS Follow!) In the new Power Rangers movie, The Green Ranger was actually Rita Repulsa, who betrayed her Ranger team and fell in a final battle with Zordon’s Red Ranger. At the end of the movie, the new Power Rangers defeat Rita and presumably collect the green Power Coin she used as a power source. An end credits scene also presumably gave us a new host for that green Power Coin: new Angel Grove High student, Tommy Oliver.

We never see Tommy in the scene, which has led fans to debate whether a male or female actor should be cast in the role. Now, one of the relevant and important voices on the matter is being heard: that of original Green Power Ranger/Tommy Oliver actor, Jason David Frank!

Frank weighed in on issue of the new Green Ranger in a recent interview with THR. According to the actor/athlete:

No matter what Haim Saban does, people are going to love it. He would not allow something that fans will not like. After watching the movie, anything is possible. It doesn’t matter what color your skin is. It doesn’t matter if you’re female or you’re male… No matter what, when you’re in that spandex, and in that suit you are a superhero.”

Frank also joked that he himself may not be ready to be replaced as the Green Ranger, saying, “I’m still Tommy for now! The Green Ranger is going to fill my shoes. But I still have my own shoes I’m wearing.” Frank has (by far) the longest track record in the Power Rangers franchise. He’s been in so many installments of the TV series, stretching from the ’90s all the way up until 2014. For all intents and purposes, he is The Green Ranger; andin his own words, “The Green Ranger kicks butt. The Green Ranger has always been the most popular.”

It’s wise for Frank to sidestep offering an opinion, as it would probably spark “controversy,” no matter which answer he gave. For now, Fans will just have to enjoy the current film, and all of Jason David Frank’s extensive work in the franchise, until official casting announcements for the new Green Ranger are revealed.
