This means that Sony Pictures will essentially have “first dibs” on the Russo Brothers, who directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier and will helm next year’s Captain America: Civil War. With Sony’s Spider-Man reported to appear in Civil War as part of Sony and Marvel’s recent Spider-Man merger, the deal further tightens the bond between the two studios.
“We’re thrilled to make a home at Sony Pictures, and to be partnering with the entire team,” the brothers said in a joint statement. “The studio has created an environment that is not only collaborative, but truly filmmaker-friendly and we’re excited to begin developing both new and ambitious material with them.”
There’s no word on what Sony might have planned for the Russos, but expect an announcement as the directors move closer to Captain America: Civil War’s May 6, 2016 release.
