The 10-minute short is expected to be shot on location in the mountains of British Columbia during the show’s hiatus in late April. All funds raised — they’ve got three weeks left to generate $50,000, and have about $17,000 already accounted for — will go directly to production costs.

Set in the Blue Ridge Mountains in 1860, “The Letter Carrier” revolves around a mother who hides her family from a terrifying letter carrier who whistles as he searches for children to sell into slavery.

“Our mailman was a whistler, so you could hear him long before your would see him,” Martin told the Daily News. “So my aunt, one day just to get us to bed, told us a scary story about the guy that made him seem dangerous. It certainly scared us … and it obviously stuck me with all these years, those words: ‘the letter carrier, the letter carrier, the letter carrier.’”

“Having that backdrop [of slavery], it really says so much about race and about people of color in America, and about the consequences of slavery that are still happening now,” said Cosnett.
