LaBeouf was in Georgia filming The Peanut Butter Falcon when the events occurred in a downtown nightlife district of Savannah. According to police, LaBeouf became belligerent when a bystander refused to give him a cigarette, causing him to launch into a slew of obscenities at the bystander. The actor reportedly ran into a nearby hotel in hopes of avoiding arrest.
In addition to the charge of obstruction, LaBeouf also faced the charge of disorderly conduct, to which he pleaded no contest. The actor faced charges of public drunkenness, which the prosecutors dropped.
A requirement of the plea bargain agreement is that LaBeouf must attend anger management sessions as well as undergo drug and alcohol counseling.
The actor apologized for the event after it occurred, taking to Twitter to say the incident marked a “new low” for him.
“I am deeply ashamed of my behavior and make no excuses for it,” he shared. “I have been struggling with addiction publicly for far too long, and I am actively taking steps toward securing my sobriety and hope I can be forgiven for my mistakes.”
This was only the latest encounter with the law in LaBeouf’s life this year, as an art installation he created, “#HEWILLNOTDIVIDEUS,” resulted in controversy.
The goal of the exhibit was to demonstrate that newly-elected official Donald Trump would not be able to conquer those who opposed him, with LaBeouf broadcasting a 24-hour live stream online that encouraged visitors to state “He will not divide us” for as long as they wished.
At one point during the installation, someone alleged said into the camera, “Hitler did nothing wrong.” This reportedly caused LaBeouf to accost the individual, resulting in a run-in with the police.
