In the just-under-a-week since Simon Pegg told hardcore Star Trek fans frustrated with the current incarnation of the franchise where to get off, he’s taken quite a bit of heat online, and took the opportunity of an interview with Collider (embedded below) to clarify his position on the matter and walk back the comments a bit.”Can I just please point out, following a few recent headlines of ‘Simon Pegg says ‘f–k you’ to Star Trek fans,’ I was doorstepped by a journalist very early in the morning by a journalist who said that Into Darkness had been voted the worst in a poll,” he said, noting that the “f–k you” had been more dismissive than malicious. He went on to say that he didn’t think “any sane group of people” would vote Into Darkness as the worst Star Trek film but that “I get it and of course you can have those opinions. For someone who’s been so critical of the Star Wars sequels, it’s like ‘Fair enough,’ but I would expect those Star Wars fans to say ‘f–k you’ to me, too.”The original comments, made last week, were in response to a fan vote at a Star Trek convention that named Into Darkness as the worst-ever Star Trek film, behind even Galaxy Quest, which was a loving parody of the franchise and not actually a Trek film.”It absolutely isn’t the worst Star Trek movie. It’s asinine, you know? It’s ridiculous,” Pegg told The Huffington Post at the time. “And frustrating, as well, because a lot of hard work and love went into that movie, and all J.J. wanted to do was make a film that people really enjoyed. So, to be subject to that level of sort of, like, crass f—ing ire, I just say f— you. Not you, but the people who said that. It’s also that thing, as I say, that it hasn’t been around long enough. It’s the newest one. It’s the one people least recognize. If you look back at things you really love, there’s a big list: The things that you’ve got to re-watch and enjoy, they are going to be more up there. The thing that you know the least will be at the bottom. So it might be that, too, you know?”
